The TreoCentral Forums have been afire with discussion about the Sprint Treo Pro. Many devices sold on eBay are sporting a pre-release version of the ROM that may prevent you from getting warranty support.
Mike and Dieter discuss the latest Palm Pre rumors, the new Palm Pre features we're discovered, and the Sprint Treo Pro ROM issues floating around the TreoCentral Forums. Listen in!
Here's a fun game for Monday afternoon: head on over to the Bio page for Palm CEO Ed Colligan, left click just to the left of his title, and view image. Turns out the background image is a wee bit bigger than what's viewable in the browser. Also turns out he's got something a bit interesting in his hand: a device that looks almost but not quite like a Treo Pro. We're feeling like it's a prototype of the device. The camera looks 'double wide,' which we're guessing means that there once was a self-portrait mirror. It also looks a tad thicker than it really ought, but at these levels of graininess it's rather tough to say. Heck, maybe it's just our eyes playing tricks on us.
No, not news, but hey, for Treo Fans we'll take what we can get while all the Palm attention is focused on the Palm Pre. Click through for the full image.
Update: Looks like the page no longer hides the bottom of the image (that, or our browsers starting working properly). The device in Colligan's hands - still feeling like it's not precisely the Treo Pro we know and love.
Do you have post-CTIA-syndrome? Feel like all the hot new smartphone news happened two weeks ago and not much has happened since? Welcome to Around SPE, where we highlight the big news of the week from around the network in a format that's more than just a list-o-bullets. This week we're putting the spotlight on Android Central, which saw a fairly hefty redesign on Wednesday night. Search, registration, commenting, navigation, the whole shootin' match is all much improved.
We asked if anybody in the TreoCentral forums had questions about the Sprint Treo Pro and dang if you didn't. Slightly delayed but fortified with some nitty gritty details from Autonomous GPS to Titan to Program Memory, here are some technical details on the Sprint Treo Pro.
Mike and Dieter return for the PalmCast! This week we give our eulogy to the PalmOS, discuss Roger McNamee's hijinks, and take a look at the Sprint Treo Pro and Internet Explorer Mobile 6.
Join Dieter, Matthew, Kevin, Rene, and Casey as they discuss Mobile World Congress 2009 -- there's a little bit for everybody in this gigantic cross-platfrom smartphone podcast!
This week we'll be bringing you more of the same, of course. Be sure you are paying special attention to CrackBerry.com, as this will be a HUGE week for CrackBerry Nation. This coming Thursday, February 26th, the site officially turns 2 years old!! And when CrackBerry.com turns another year older, it doesn't mean a day of celebrating, it means a week birthday festivities! Whether you're a BlackBerry owner or not you'll want to stay glued to the site for great contests, deals and giveaways each and every day. If you're not a daily visitor but want to follow the action, you can always subscribe to the CrackBerry RSS feeds or follow the site on Twitter at @crackberry.
Speaking of giveaways, time is running out for your chances to win a Nokia N85 or E71 at Nokia Experts, so be sure to head over and learn how to enter this week.
In a chat with Investors today, CEO Ed Colligan confirmed that the Centro is the end of the PalmOS line. There will be no more PalmOS devices released. Other details on the webOS and the Pre were also discussed -- including the ongoing patent battle with Apple.
After the completion of the hectic Smartphone Round Robin, your faithful bloggers at Smartphone Experts decided to keep things moving along at a heady clip. In the past week we have published somewhere in the neighborhood of 175 stories, from accessory and software reviews to news to the latest rumors. That's a lot to keep track of, so we're bringing back our regular "Around SPE" feature to give you a quick summary of what you may have missed in a format that's more helpful than just a list of links.
In that vein, our biggest recent news is that our newest sister site, Nokia Experts is starting strong with a launch contest. If you would like to earn some chances at winning a Nokia E71 or Nokia N85, make sure to enter the contest each week. There are two weeks left to go, so check back as each week we're changing up how you can enter to win!
There's plenty more smartphone news you may have missed, so read on!
Matt has a ton of knowledge about a subject that the rest of us at Smartphone Experts have historically lacked, namely Nokia, S60, and the Symbian OS in general. He gives himself a brief introduction here, in the unlikely event you're not familiar.
Nokia has, as yet, not successfully made a big smartphone push in the United States, but that's quite likely to change as they have a slew of exciting new devices coming out and are also likely to have their E71 messaging smartphone picked up by AT&T very soon. In other words, if, like us, you're relatively new to Nokia and S60 but want to learn more, Nokia Experts is surely going to be one of your best resources. Heck, Matt's already published a full review of the Nokia 5800 Tube XpressMusic touch screen S60 device. The 'Tube' is already a best-selling device overseas and is more of a worthy contender than you might think, so the review is definitely worth a read.
Go on and head over to Nokia Experts now and give 'em a big ol' hello!
As it did the year before, the Smartphone Round Robin needed to go into overtime again this time around -- but we're finished now! If you haven't been following along, here's what you missed: Each of the editors of our five Smartphone Experts sites swapped phones for a week or so, reviewing and leanring what it's like to wear another smarphone user's shoes. The result is the entire series of articles you see linked on this handy page, the Smartphone Round Robin of 2008.
What will you learn there? You'll learn that there was no single smartphone that 'won' the Round Robin -- but that's by design. There's no perfect smartphone out there, but there just might be the perfect smartphone to fit your needs. If you're looking to get a new smartphone soon, think about what you need it do to and then hit up these articles -- you'll find that depending on what each of us care about, we'll give you a useful perspective on whether a given smartphone matches up.
It happened live last Tuesday, but you can listen in to the (slightly foreshortened) version in our podcast feed: the 2nd (and last) Smartphone Round Robin Round Table. Join Casey, Kevin, Rene, and Dieter as we discuss the final two devices in our Smartphone Round Robin: the T-Mobile G1 and the the HTC Fuze. Plus, we answer your questions live -- well, it was live then, so forgive the slightly worse-than-usual sound quality.
A photo of a swiveling smartphone with a decidedly Palm-type keyboard has just surfaced. Is it the Linux-based Smartphone? A new Windows Mobile form-factor?
Now "viral marketing" gets a bad name and often rightly so -- it's often heavy-handed, boring, or a combination of the two. Sure, 'remxing Claüs' into a DJ is a little corny, but it's so well done it's an endearing kind of corny that works.
Most importantly to me as a Palm supporter, though, is that it's the first time in memory that Palm has put out a great television campaign, something Mike Overbo and I have long-agitated for in our TreoCast Podcast. The fact that it's combined with a very well-executed online strategy seems to indicate that even though Palm is facing some tough times, they've finally struck upon the right way to spend their ad dollars.
Join us for the first of two special Smartphone Round Robin Roundtables! This week, Casey, Kevin, Rene, Jennifer, and Dieter all come together to discuss three of the Smartphone Round Robin devices: The iPhone 3G, the Treo Pro, and the BlackBerry Bold!
The Smartphone Round Robin is back! Read on for more on the Smartphone Round Robin and for details on how you can win one of five Smartphone Prize Packs!
This week Mike and Dieter fight through debilitating illness to discuss what might have been had Apple purchased Palm back in 1997, talk about some other industry news, and hit on the latest patches.
Last week both CrackBerry.com and WMExperts found themselves on the cusp of major releases -- the BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Bold on AT&T, the HTC Fuze on AT&T, not to mention a few others on the Windows Mobile side. So while everybody has been anticipating new devices, all of the editors at SPE are anticipating something else that will be starting on November 17th. The hint is in the full story!
What's the big news in the Smartphone world this week? It's a mix, really. Android's looking like a viable platform to more and more people, there are a ton of Windows Mobile devices on the way, and both CrackBerry.com and the iPhone Blog are running contests that ought to spark your interest. Read on!
You may not realize it, but the site you're reading right now is a part of one of the premier networks of smartphone news and review sites. We call it the 'Smartphone Experts Network' and if you haven't heard, we've recently added a new member to our family, Android Central. That brings the number of our smartphone communities up to five sites. You can find links to these sites and to their latest stories either in the sidebar or footer of every SPE site.
I thought now would be a good time to introduce a new weekly blog post I'll be putting up at each of our sites called 'Around SPE,' which will give you a very quick roundup of the biggest stories at each of our sites. Now, 'big stories' are just a tiny part of what we offer, as each of our sites also feature vibrant communities, engaging podcasts, and also accessory stores if you're looking to make your smartphone a little better.
In addition to our new sister site, there's also some other SPE Network news to share, so follow me after the break to learn more!
Silicon Alley Insider [via] is reporting that Vindigo's parent company is closing up their shop and has laid-ff Vindigo's 30 employees.
Vindigo is an application for the PalmOS (and Windows Mobile, though support there has always been thin) that was incredibly pioneering. Over 5 years ago, this application allowed you to sync up local information for a large number of cities. With it you could look up restaurants, get directions, view local maps, read reviews, find movie times, and more. It simply never has been equaled on the PalmOS platform by another application for its speed, quality, and value. Although it hadn't seen any significant update in several years, scores of PalmOS users still swore by the software despite its slightly dated look.
Vindigo lovers looking for a replacement may want to consider Live Search on Windows Mobile. For the Palm OS, I hate to say it, but there's not a great parallel.
Sadly, it appears that Vindigo's parent company, Japan's For-Side, tried to sell the company but was demanding way too much money for it.
BGR has uncovered the upcoming launch schedule for AT&T. The big news for Treo fans is that the Treo 680 looks like it's going to be officially discontinued on their network. This comes as little surprise as the AT&T Centro has all the same features in a smaller package and has been popular for the network.
As we said in our review of the AT&T Centro, it really does represent the device that Palm was aiming for with the original Treo 680 -- a PalmOS smartphone with mass market appeal that would grow the market. We'll always have a special place in our hearts for the Treo 680 as the first PalmOS device to drop the external antenna.
The Palm Treo Pro is the Treo that many users have been dreaming of: A Treo with WiFi, GPS, a flush screen, and it's thin to boot. Does it live up to the Zen of Palm? Read on!
Want more Treo Pro? We have you covered with both video and images of the Treo Pro as well a comparisons with its Treo brethren and the competition (read: BlackBerry Bold). Check it out!
Although the Treo Pro is in many ways "just another Treo" and "just another Windows Mobile Smartphone," Palm has actually put quite a lot of thought into its hardware and software design. Read on to hear what what sort of design decisions Palm made while creating the Treo Pro
Dieter and Mike discuss the news of the past two weeks in their first ever 49th podcast! Plus -- a huge listener email section and the Foleo, one year later. Listen in!
Palm and Sprint have finally announced the Treo 800w, nearly two years after their last CDMA Windows Mobile Treo, the 700wx. At long last, we have a Treo with WiFi and GPS. Does Palm have a winner here? So far we have to say we're very impressed with the 800w's performance and (still) underwhelmed with the looks.
There's a lot more to say, of course, so read on for our full review and unboxing video first look!
As expected, Palm had another rough quarter. Though they sold a record number of Centros, they lost $43.4 million -- more than they'd lost the previous quarter -- on revenue that was less than they'd earned the previous quarter as well.
This week we discuss Windows Mobile 6 coming to the Verizon Treo 700wx, some other software updates, and much more. Plus your comments and the latest from the community. Listen in!
This week Dieter can't stop talking about how the Treo 800w looks, but there's also other pieces of news and communiques from the community. Listen in!
A special TreoCast this week: we're joined by The Cell Phone Junkie's Mickey Papillon. We chat about the Treo 750 and get his perspective on the major carriers in the US. It's a service smackdown!
Palm is seeking people to test an innovative new product. This product is focused on seasoned business professionals. People who commute and spend a ton of time working on email and on the phone. This test is for people looking for cutting edge technology and demand constant communication.
Qualified candidates should work in an enterprise level business and have a lot of experience with varied technologies. These people should invest a significant amount of money in their technology and use it daily.
We've long known that Palm intends to release an "enterprise" Treo this summer, as confirmed by Ed Colligan himself during their last conference call. Many expect this device to be the Treo 800w that we have seen leaked many times on our forums.
The most interesting aspect, though, is that the email suggests the following requirements: Sprint, Bluetooth user, and WiFi Access. Sounds like the rumored specs of the Treo 800w are spot-on.
Dig back into the misty mists of yesteryear - do you remember the VisorPhone? It was the precursor for the Treo and it would be crazy to bring it back. Crazy like a fox.
A day late, but we're still here for you: Mike and Dieter discuss Palm's Quarterly Results, the Treo 800w, and fear the wrath of Oprah in the community segment. Listen in!

We have some oldies-but-goodies from the forums too.
Update 2: Oops again! It's *NOT* the Centro. More inside. Over the weekend Palm Europe posted a teaser page: A new smartphone is coming Sept 12th. What is it going to be?
In today's TreoCast, we'll address that Engadget open letter, the new Centro leaked image, take a peek at what "industry analysts" are saying, answer some listener mail, and hit up the forums.
Surprising some and pleasing many - Palm CEO Ed Colligan posted to the Official Palm Blog today in response to a recent Engadget editorial. What does it mean for the future of Palm?
