News Highlights...

Came across a few stories that may be of interest those of us on the move.

First of all, take a close look at this chart.

First notable is that Palm Treo is in the mix (note, it wasn't mentioned whether this was for Windows Mobile or Palm OS Treos). The other thing to pay attention to is the fact that the Palm Treo held its own.

In fact a blog post that at the eMarketer website
included this remark:

"If you look more carefully at the CFI Group study, the satisfaction data doesn't seem all that disparate, with some exceptions. For example, the BlackBerry and Treo tend to index lower for some of the multimedia functions, which makes sense given that these two devices have historically been oriented toward business use."

Ringtones NOT public performance... what a relief!

Don't know if you have been following this story, but a judge just ruled that wireless carriers DO NOT have to pay every time a ringtone gets played. Can you imagine the nightmare that would have been to track. Here's the link to the write-up that appeared at MocoNews.com about it.

"Ringtones are not public performances --and thus, wireless carriers do not have to pay the content owners every time one of them gets played --according to a ruling from US District Judge Denise Cote (via Ars Technica). The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) sued AT&T and other carriers earlier this year, in an attempt to try to get them to pay royalties every time a user's ringtone was played. This is in addition to high download rates the carriers already pay for the 30-second song snippets."

Examples of Ringtone apps include Ace Mobile Software's Ringtone Maker for Treo Pro and Gx5's Ringtone Expressions for the Palm Centro.

Last but not least, another behavior-related story. According to this post which appeared at Cellular-News.com, "The vast majority of Americans agree that there are unspoken rules about mobile etiquette, and that checking e-mails, sending text messages and making phone calls while in the company of others is unacceptable.." This is according to a survey that was conducted by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Intel. The results are based on the input of 2,625 adults ages 18 and older.

Further down in the story, there was this:

>> One in three online adults (30 percent) would be offended to receive an online gift wish list from a friend and/or an immediate/extended family member.

>> An overwhelming majority of online adults have no tolerance for mobile technology etiquette violations at holiday services, with 87 percent agreeing that it is inappropriate to use a mobile device at religious venues.

>> Travel can be a little bit tense around the holidays, and some feel that it is no time for multitasking - 36 percent of online adults agree that it is inappropriate to use a mobile device in an airport security line.

>> A majority (60 percent) of online adults consider using a mobile device while on a date as inappropriate.

So what's the take-away today?

Treo users are still being counted. Our wireless provider shouldn't be dinging us for both buying and using ringtones (pass through tax). And, be super-aware on how and when you use your mobile device.
