Palm VP Inside Intel

Sun Jul 18, 2010 - 4:22 PM EDT - By Annie Latham

On Friday, the story broke that Mike Bell, Palm's senior vice president of Product Development, is leaving the company to join Intel.

The internal email announcement said the following:

Intel announced today that we have hired Mike Bell-- a veteran of both Palm and Apple -- as vice president and director of Smartphone Product Development in the company's Ultra Mobility Group (UMG).

Bell is a technology industry veteran who has been part of the executive management team at Palm since 2007, most recently as the senior vice president of Product Development, responsible for all aspects of product strategy, development, and deployment.

Over at The Wall Street Journal, Don Clark wrote:

"How can Intel, which makes chips rather than cellphones, use talents like Bell's? The company has long faced a big disadvantage in getting its technology into user's pockets, largely because its chips draw more power than those of companies that license designs from ARM Holdings. Intel is gradually closing that gap, but even assuming they achieved parity the company will have to convince software developers, hardware makers and ultimately consumers that there are real differentiating factors to justify a technology switch."

Engadget's Vlad Savov remarked, "Seriously, what the hell did HP acquire when it bought Palm? A bunch of pretty patents and a rapidly dwindling talent pool, it would seem."

The WSJ article made note that Bell's role will be to "help build and lead a team with the charter to build breakthrough smartphone reference designs with the explicit intent of accelerating Intel architecture into the market," per Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president of Intel's "ultra-mobility" group, in an internal email.

And the smartphone world continues to turn...
