PDA market continues to decline

Wed Jul 27, 2005 - 1:17 PM EDT - By James Hromadka

The end is nigh

The global handheld market for traditional PDAs (non-smartphones) continues to decline, according to data released from IDC. According to this C|Net article, the 1.7 million PDA units shipped in the second quarter were 24.9% lower than the first quarter and 20.8% lower than the prior year. Here were the top sellers for the quarter:
  1. Palm
  2. Hewlett-Packard
  3. Acer
  4. Dell
  5. Yakumo
Over time, the traditional PDA will be relegated to a niche market and smartphones like the Treo and Blackberry will fill its place. wireless and cellular devices already comprise 55% of the total PDA market, and that number is only going to go up.
