CES: Sling Media Announces Palm OS SlingPlayer

Mon Jan 8, 2007 - 2:27 AM EST - By Dieter Bohn

Overview

Here's the first bit of news from CES and it's cool enough to deserve a story all its own: SlingPlayer is officially coming to the PalmOS this quarter. This means that, among other things, Windows Mobile Treo users soon won't have "I can watch my own television wherever I want" bragging rights over their Palm OS bretheren.

Announced today, the update was long expected, as there had been photos on the internet of the Palm logo on SlingBox packaging, covered with a sticker. In any case, it's good news for 700p users. 650 and 680 users, well, you can give it a shot, but it's not likely that streaming video is going to be a super-fun experience without a 3G network like EVDO or UMTS backing it up.

A snippet from the press release:

SlingPlayer Mobile for Palm OS will feature a visually enticing graphical interface and enhanced navigation control while leveraging the functionality and ease of use of the Palm OS -- and specifically the Treo smartphone -- that customers have come to know and love.

SlingPlayer Mobile is a software client that gives Slingbox customers the ability to watch and control their home TV from a wirelessly enabled smartphone. With today’s announcement, SlingPlayer Mobile now supports Treo smartphones running both Palm OS and Windows Mobile, including the Treo 700p, the Treo 700w, the Treo 700wx and the recently announced Treo 750.

Exact pricing and availability are, as yet, unknown, but Sling Media promises a public beta in Q1 '07.
