A Bit of Nova Info

Fri Feb 1, 2008 - 2:33 PM EST - By Jennifer Chappell

Overview

I just saw some more talk on Palm's upcoming "Nova" OS via Palm Infocenter. PIC is reporting on PC Magazine's Sascha Segan's chat with Stephane Maes, Palm's director of product management.

Maes told Segan that Palm is getting back to their roots with simplicity and elegance in their next-generation platform. In the PC Magazine article, Maes was quoted as saying:

It's a Web-enabled world, where people have contacts in multiple locations. You start thinking about all of the different places where people have information, it's really about managing people's lives. That's a lot of the heritage we're really going to leverage and expand on going forward.

This statement gives us a hint that Nova will be able to store its data "in the cloud". Not too long ago, Palm had people testing their "Palm Backup Beta", which backed up your personal information "over-the-air". Palm is of course well known for its personal information management (PIM). It looks as if Palm is going back to that heritage with Nova and will expand on those roots, giving us even more ways to manage and store our information.

Here's another interesting Stephane Maes quote from the PC Mag article:

When we did some of our best things is when we had everything under one roof," he said. "If you look at some of the great successes in the industry recently, they have software, hardware and services all together.

Palm is set up now to move forward. They got back control of their own OS and Elevation Partners has their back. They've brought some very creative people on board recently, and they're working on Nova and should have it ready by the end of 2008, and have some new devices coming in early 2009. I'm really looking forward to the new OS and gadgets. ;-)
