Apps and How-To's: mOcean

Fri Feb 20, 2009 - 8:55 AM EST - By Brian Hart

Overview

Update: Seems that the free, ad-supported version of mOcean is no longer available. Sorry! MotionApps says that you can try mOcean for 7 days (fully functional trial), and if you wish to keep it, you'll would need to purchase an activation code after the trial expires.

Even though it seems like everyone has moved on from Palm OS -- focusing on Windows Mobile and the upcoming webOS and the Pre -- there are still tons of great Palm OS apps out there and still lots of Palm OS users (like me!). I've been enjoying my Centro for quite a while now and even with it's diminutive size and small screen, it can perform admirably as a multimedia device. But even if you have the hardware, you still need a good interface to fully enjoy your media. There are numerous apps out there for enjoying your music, podcasts, photos, and more. These apps are a great way to carry your media around in your pocket. If you're toting a Palm OS Treo or Centro, MotionApps has a multimedia app called mOcean that you'll want to check out.

mOcean allows you to enjoy your music, photos, videos, audiobooks, podcasts, and internet radio on your Palm Centro or Treo. The free version is ad-supported, displaying a small banner at the top of the screen. Purchasing the app will eliminate the ads. The interface is both finger-friendly and compatible with the 5-way navigator. mOcean 3 is the most current version of the app and permits synchronizing your iTunes music collection to your Treo or Centro. Some of the features that mOcean offers include the following:

  • Create and manage unlimited playlists
  • Browse your music by song title, artist, album, genre, or playlist
  • Listen to your music in the background while using a different app
  • Use the touchscreen, 5-way navigator, or keyboard for quick shortcuts
  • Store music on your SD/MMC card
  • Automatically pause playback when your phone rings
  • Convert any audio content, including podcasts, into MP3 format to play on the go
  • Change and customize skins, setting background image or selecting the interface that you want
  • and much moreĀ…

For $19.99, you can buy mOcean here. A big thanks to MotionApps for such a cool app as mOcean. Download it to your Treo or Centro and give it a try, then share your experience with the community.

You can try mOcean for 7 days (fully functional trial), and if you wish to keep it, you'll would need to purchase an activation code after the trial expires. Many app trials don't have full functionality, but with the mOcean 7 day trial, you'll really be able to get a feel of the whole program. You should be able to make up your mind within 7 days of using a fully functional app whether or not you want to put up the dough.

If you are a developer with some helpful and/or fun software or if you have a tip that you wish to pass on to the rest of the community, just email me at: [email protected].
