JC Penney & Cellfire Trying Mobile Coupons

Fri Sep 25, 2009 - 9:26 PM EDT - By Annie Latham

On Thursday, JC Penney started testing the use of scannable mobile coupons at 16 of their retail outlets in the Houston area. They have partnered with Cellfire (written about in July), a business that offers discounts from multiple retailers through a free, downloadable mobile app.

In the test stores, new imaging scanners have been installed at registers that can read the "2D" barcode coupons."

It's a great idea and definitely a feather in Cellfire's cap, for having expanded the types of businesses covered to include a mid-range soft goods retailer like JC Penney.

JC Penney has been working especially hard at polishing up its image this year. In July, they opened the company's first retail store in Manhattan using a major, multimedia marketing campaign.

It will be interesting to see how well this program is received by customers as well as sales clerks. If successful, this ground-breaking move by JC Penney may be adopted by others (i.e. Target, Wal-Mart).

To register for the Cellfire service, go online (via PC or the mobile Web) to www.cellfire.com/jcpenney or text "JCP" to 28888.
