Growing Popularity of Smartphones.
According to The NPD Group special offers on many of the popular smartphones in the fourth quarter drove penetration to nearly a third in the U.S. Smartphones are now in the hands of about 31 percent of the U.S. population, growing from only 23 percent in the year-ago period. Of those phones purchased in the fourth-quarter, nearly two-thirds cost $150 or less, and many more were bought for even less.

Social Networking via Mobile Browser Grows
A comScore report just released states that 30.8% of smartphone users accessed social networking sites via their mobile browser in January 2010, up 8.3 points from 22.5% one year ago. Access to Facebook via mobile browser grew 112% in the past year, while Twitter experienced a 347% jump.

Alaska Airlines Native App Unveiled
Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air Launch Mobile Travel Apps for iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile
Last week, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air announced the launch of three mobile apps designed for iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users. The free apps, which can be downloaded at http://www.alaskaair.com/mobile, are custom built for each device and can be downloaded directly to the smartphone.

Palm to Announce Earnings on Thursday
Palm will announce its third-quarter fiscal year 2010 financial results on Thursday, March 18, shortly after 4 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Pacific), followed by a conference call for the public at 4:30 p.m. Eastern (1:30 p.m. Pacific). The conference call will be hosted by Jon Rubinstein, chairman and chief executive officer, and Doug Jeffries, chief financial officer. Investors and other interested parties are encouraged to listen to the call via audio webcast at Palm's Investor Relations website (http://investor.palm.com).
