Microsoft to Licenses PalmSource Patents

Fri Oct 8, 2010 - 3:33 PM EDT - By Annie Latham

According to a story by Nick WIngfield of The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft has licensed dozens of patents related to smartphones -- most of them originating from Acacia Research, a Japanese company that acquired PalmSource, the firm behind the Palm operating system, in 2005.

The deal will allow Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., to avoid at least some of the litigation that has been targeted at big rivals in the smartphone market recently. Microsoft licensed the patents --74 of them in all-- for undisclosed terms.

You may recall that PalmSource, which focused on developing and licensing the Palm operating system that powered the Treo and other devices, was spun-off from device maker Palm Inc. in 2003.
