Skype for Treo

Mon Sep 13, 2004 - 5:30 PM EDT - By Michael Ducker

As PalmAddict notes, ABC News, in their coverage of DEMOmobile 2004, reported that Skype plans to release a Palm OS compatible version this October.

"A name on many lips was Skype Technologies S.A., the rave of the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) revolution. Luxembourg-based Skype displayed its software for Pocket PC-based handheld computers that lets anyone in a Wi-Fi cloud make a free Internet voice call to other Skype users. Company founder Niklas Zennstrom called from Europe and the audio quality was at least as clear as any landline phone service. A Palm OS version is promised for next month, and the handheld software also supports the paid SkypeOut service (2 cents per minute for U.S. calls) for connecting with traditional phones worldwide."

Skype did not return our requests for comment in time for the publication of this news item. It is unknown if the version that will be released next month will or will not work with the Treo. However, the Treo, especially the CDMA 1xRTT version, would have the bandwidth to do basic VoIP like Skype supports.

Last week Skype announced the 1.0 version of its Pocket PC software, and the beta version of it's Mac OS X edition. It has already been available for Linux and Windows for about a year, proudly amassing more than 22 million downloads. I've had good experience with Skype on both Windows and Mac - it brings the ease of Apple's iChat's telephony features to users of every operating system worldwide. Quality is good, but through my built in speaker and microphone it hasn't been perfect.
