Hidden WiFi Driver (Not) Found on GSM Treo 650

Mon Feb 21, 2005 - 7:26 PM EST - By James Hromadka

Shadowmite Strikes Again

It appears that the GSM model of the Treo has an additional feature besides the minor differences I had found. Resident TreoCentral Forums guru Shadowmite has found that the WiFi driver for the Palm appears to be on the GSM model:
Shadowmite:I found the wifi drivers in the memory image on the gsm 650, but they are NOT listed in rom, the phone doesn't know they are there. They are in a unused location in memory just sitting there with the first characters of the filenames removed. I currently have no clue why they are there, or if they are different from what we already have.
The driver is not enabled, but hopefully PalmOne will make it happen. Looks like it's time I break down and buy a WiFi card. We'll post more information on this development as it comes available. Click here for the ongoing discussion.

Update: False positive, folks. Hopefully one day PalmOne will release WiFi drivers for the Treo 650, but they are not there yet.
