Parrot Rhythm n Blue Car Stereo

Mon Jul 24, 2006 - 11:38 AM EDT - By James Hromadka

Bluetooth Setup

Oh yeah, the Rhythm n' Blue is also a Bluetooth hands-free car kit as well, which is the main reason I got the device in the first place. To pair the car stereo, press Menu > Bluetooth > Settings > Advanced Settings > Pair a phone. The Treo isn't directly listed, but my SE K750 and several other phones are also on the list. The reason for this is that some phones can directly synchronize their address books with the Rhythm n' Blue.

I first paired the K750 by selecting the K750 and then paired the devices. Passcode is 1234. Shortly thereafter, my K750 told me that the Rhythm n' Blue was requesting access. A few moments later, my entire phone book was in the car stereo. The process was seamless, however every time you get in the car, the car stereo requests access to update the phone book.

For the Treo, select Other Phones and pair using 1234 as the passcode. After pairing, all my contacts that I stored with the K750 were replaced by the quick dial entries from the Treo 650's Phone application. It's better than nothing but still was surprising since I don't even use the quick dial buttons on the Treo(I just type the person's name), so my Address Book became about seven entries! After a bit of searching on Parrot's website, I found a Help article that explains how to get the Treo's full Address Book over to the Rhythm n' Blue:

  1. Disconnect the Treo from the Rhythm n' Blue
  2. Press the Contacts Button
  3. Make sure that All is selected in the drop-down menu
  4. From the top menu (you can reach it by pressing the little button located near the red hanging up button),select SEND CATEGORY
  5. Select Bluetooth, and then OK
  6. Select the receiving device on the Discovery Results screen, and then select OK
  7. The information is sent to the receiving device
The Treo reset on me the first time I tried this, but the second attempt was successful. The Help article also explains how to send an individual contact, which is good since I don't necessarily call all the entries in my Treo's Address Book. You can pair with up to five different devices.

If you're worried about switching between phones, don't be. When I switched back to my K750 phone, all my voice tags and contact entries were still there, so the Rhythm n' Blue keeps a separate list for each phone. This is extremely handy if you plan on sharing your car with someone else and don't want them to have access to your phone book entries. If the Rhythm n' Blue is not connected to your phone, the Address Book is empty. This is a good security feature should your car get broken into, as the perpetrator won't have cart blanche access to your address book.

Voice Tags

To make a phone call without using voice recognition, press Phone and then turn the dial to scroll to the first letter of the person's last name, then you will see a listing of names. Select the person's name and then which phone number to dial (Home, Cell, etc). The Rhythm n' Blue will then dial the number like normal. Or you can just dial the call from your phone and let the car stereo take over the call.

That gets tedious after a while, so you're going to want to setup voice tags for everyone eventually. Go into Menu > Bluetooth > Voice Commands. First setup the Keywords for the different types of phones that your contacts will have (Home, Cell, etc.). Then while still inside Voice Commands select Phonebook and record voice tags for each of your contacts. When done, keep pressing the Red button to get back to the main screen. The Rhythm n' Blue can store up to 150 voice tags.

To make a call, say the keyword "Phone" or press the Green button and then say the person's name, wait for a little tone and then say the phone type (Home, Cell, etc). I usually just press the Green button to start a call since the mic has trouble picking up the word "Phone" when I have my radio going. While on a call, you can press the Green button to go off handsfree and switch the conversation to your mobile phone (handy for discreet calls when others are in the car). Press the Green button again to go back to handsfree mode. When finished with a call, press the Red button to end the call. Making phone calls is really fun and feels futuristic. Hover cars here we come!

When a call comes in, the Tuner/CD mutes. If someone calls you that has a voice tag, you will hear that person's name. You will also see the person's Caller ID information on the LCD screen.
