Huzzah! Click here if you have a 700wx and download the update which will allow you to send SMS messages to other carriers. The update is a simple cab file, which means that if you go to the above link there's also a download you can type directly into your Treo to get the fix for the issue. I'm also told that 700wx owners should be receiving a text-message alert from Sprint about the download.
The update should be rolled into the next ROM and also will be pre-installed on all new 700wx that Palm ships in the near future
As reported in a TreoCentral forum thread and then in this story, for over a month now 700wx owners have experienced a myriad of SMS issues. The worst of these was an inability to send text messages to certain other carriers (such as T-Mobile and Verizon). Also annoying for many users was that receiving text messages of over 145 characters often resulted in repeat messages.
In any case, last Thursday Palm responded with an announcement that the update would be released "before the end of the year." Less than a week later, we have that fix. So while I'm still bothered that text messaging was broken for so long, I'm overjoyed that Palm has successfully over-delivered on their target-date for patching the problem.
