Palm Announces Treo Pro

Wed Aug 20, 2008 - 9:13 AM EDT - By Jennifer Chappell

The Treo Pro is Here... Officially!

Palm has announced their Treo Pro today.

According to Palm's press release, the Treo Pro will be available in September in Europe(2) through Vodafone (from free to EUR 399 with contract) and O2 (pricing is available from O2 direct sales and online business stores), and in Australia through Telstra (from free with contract). It will be available in the United States in the fall through the Palm online store (http://www.palm.com/store) as well as select Internet, retail and enterprise resellers for a suggested retail price of $549. The U.S. version is unlocked and unsubsidized, giving end users the flexibility to simply insert their existing active SIM card and immediately start using their Treo Pro without a new contract.

One of the rumored specs of the Treo Pro was that it would have a 1500mAh battery, and this has turned out to be true, thank goodness. Very surprising since the 800w's battery is just a 1150mAh battery, same as the Centro's. The Treo Pro is a beautiful device for sure and since the leaks began, people have been talking about it and how much they want one.

I'm sure you've seen the leaks pouring out lately about the Palm Treo Pro (AKA Treo 850), which started on our forums recently when forum member scottymomo dug through Palm's website and discovered a flash demo of the Treo Pro. scottymomo posted screen captures of the flash demo, and the flash demo was immediately taken down by Palm upon discovery of the leak.

Dieter posted a story yesterday in which he talked about the Treo Pro being leaked so be sure to read that one if you haven't already.

Here are the Treo Pro's Specs:

  • 400Mhz CPU , but snappy response
  • 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM! (Other reports show In use: 43.96mb, Free 57.72mb)
  • 320*320 screen
  • GPS
  • Full Tri-band 3G, Quad-band GSM
  • 2 Megapixel camera
  • microUSB connector!
  • 3.5mm Earphone connector
  • 1500mah battery (this is looking like it might actually be true?)

Palm's news today brings excitement to the world of smartphones. The Treo Pro is what so many loyal Palm users have been waiting for. And the Treo Pro is something that Palm needed to release to keep some of the flock from meandering over to Apple and RIM.

From the press release:

"Businesses want the control and savings that Windows Mobile affords, in an innovative and elegant package that keeps their users happy. That's where Palm comes in," said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer, Palm, Inc. "Everything about Treo Pro -- from the hardware design to the packaging and accessories -- embodies the elegant and simplified end-to-end experience that our customers expect from Palm."

Palm's Blog has a video up today on the Treo Pro featuring three of the Treo Pro's very proud parents -- Stephane Maes (VP of product marketing), Peter Skillman (VP of design), and John Moses (VP of customer relations) - discussing the Treo Pro's thoughtful balance of powerful business-friendly features and surprisingly simple design.. You can watch the video below.

I really like the looks of the Treo Pro and would love to get one since it's of the GSM flavor. The Black color looks really nice and I love the new look of the 5-way navigational button and the flush screen and the flush Windows, Calendar, OK, and Email buttons. Well, they look like small icons but I think they're touch sensitive. I hope they are anyway. That would be cool!

Yep, I'd love to get my hands on one! But.... looks like AT&T won't be getting the Treo Pro. As mentioned above, the Treo Pro will be available from Vodafone and O2 in Europe(2) and from Telstra in Australia, also will be available in an unlocked version in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific.

You can read the full press release here.

I've never had a Treo with Wi-Fi or with a 2 megapixel camera, so this Treo is sounding mighty tempting. ;-)
