Customizing iSync with Treo icons

Wed Apr 6, 2005 - 11:14 PM EDT - By James Hromadka

There is no Step 5

One of the things that has always annoyed me about Apple's iSync is that there is not a good icon for the newer Treos. After playing around in Photoshop for a bit, I made up some for the Treo 650 and Treo 600. Below are instructions on how you can customize iSync to use a Treo 600 or 650 icon. Here is what iSync looks like after the change:

iSync window

To make the changes, you must have an administrator account and be comfortable with using Terminal.
  1. Close iSync if it is running
  2. Save either of the following files to your Desktop folder:

    treo650-isyncicon.tiff

    treo600-isyncicon.tiff

  3. Open up Terminal, which you can find in the /Applications/Utilities folder
  4. Type the following commands (you will be prompted for your account password)

    cd /System/Library/SyncServices/PalmBladeConduit.bundle/Contents/Resources
    sudo mkdir Backups
    sudo cp *.tiff Backups
    sudo cp ~/Desktop/treo650-isyncicon.tiff ./Treo.tiff
A few notes:
  • Change the 650 to 600 for the last command if you want the Treo 600 icon
  • If you upgraded to the Treo from a different Palm device, you have to replace its file instead, i.e tungsten.tiff instead of Treo.tiff
  • The Backups folder contains the original files

If you are having any problems, discuss it here.
