Handspring released today the Treo 600 SDK; after reading all 396 pages we bring you three short slideshows of screenshots along with notes from the SDK. Click on the image to forward the slideshow. These slideshows utilize iframe code therefore you will need a fairly recent browser to view them.

First off is a quick look at the phone app.

The built in 5 account pop3 mail application on the Treo 600 handles 4 types of attachments. Handspring has a system setup to enable third party programs to also offer attachment support in mail. Built in, the mail app supports ringtones, JPEGs, Vcal/Vcard, and PRC/PDB's. Mail can also insert attachments such as pictures from the camera or sounds. Below is a small slideshow showing some screenshots of mail, along with images of the setup routine.

Mobile web developrs should be aware that Blazer 3.0's header is: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 95; PalmSource; Blazer 3.0) Hercules/3.0;16;160x160 . Blazer 3.0 supports GIF, JPEG, PNG, Animated GIF, and WBMP images. The SDK has an interesting note about images in Blazer:

"If manual image download mode is set in the preferences dialog, the customer can select and manually download images individually.
– Blank boxes are displayed for images when the page is first loaded.
– When an image receives focus in this mode, pressing center pops up a context sensitive menu over the image box with the two options: "Follow link" and "Load image" Loading the image then treats the image as normal—selecting it navigates to the link. Note: This is a nice to have feature an can be punted if necessary. If punted, then there will be no option for loading images in "no images" mode."

Blazer 3.0 will not support plugin's or Java Applets. It will however support JavaScript, and SSL.

SMS has been updated to include a new chat feature. This chat feature automaticly reconizes if a user has a series of SMS's going back and forth between two users, and will group them together accordingly. MMS is a new feature of the Treo 600. It is based on Electric Pocket's Pixer MMS program. More information on MMS in the Treo can be found in this article. The slideshow below features screenshots of the SMS main screen, Chat, and two MMS messages.

The SDK also goes into detail about Treo 600's Smart Text feature: "Treo 600 has a new Smart Text Engine (STE) shared library. It is designed to allow any application to automatically identify, render, and link web URLs, email addresses, and phone numbers to appropriate applications. For example, tapping a phone number in an SMS dials the number, tapping a URL in an email launches it in the browser. The STE offers a high level of convenience for end users as it seamlessly links the information and communication applications on the Smartphone." The STE seems to be a major addon to Palm OS, and significantly changes text support. It even will detect emoticons, and substitute an appropriate image!

Handspring enabled easier support for using the Treo 600 as a modem by giving some "transparent operation" of the radio API's, allowing software to not have to deal directly with the radio and AT commands. This should make modem software much easier to write, and perhaps bring down the price.

Last of all, Handspring mentions support of DRM in the Treo 600, however no other details are given. "Licensed content should utilize the built in Digital Rights Management (DRM) system support."

The SDK is incredibly long and detailed, so it is granted that the writers might of wanted to throw in some fun. See page 24's message from the network ;)

Find anything else? Post it in the thread!

On the next page you will find the four tutorials that you see when you turn on the Treo 600 for the first time.
