Over? Not Quite. New PalmOS Devices Coming Soon...
You may not have heard of them, but a privately owned New Zealand based company called Aceeca (www.aceeca.com) has been offering rugged Palm OS devices for years. Presently, they are selling a $399 Rugged Digital Assistant (RDA) called
Meazura which is built to IP67 standards, completely resistant to dust ingress, and is "the world's first waterproof (not just resistant) Palm Powered device."
According to a post by Nilay Patel at Engadget it looks like Aceeca has two more Palm OS devices in the pipeline.
Described as a "consumer-targeted Aceeca PDA32 Garnet, which packs an unnamed ARM CPU, a QVGA screen, and an SD expansion slot into a case that's 'taller than a Palm TX and about twice as thick.'" The price is supposed to be $199. Wireless options are extra.
For corporate customers, there will be the MEZ1500 Garnet, which will run a steep $499 and keeps the QVGA screen but adds a bigger battery, a faster processor, and an expansion bus for various optional barcode scanner, RFID readers, and so forth. It is the first Aceeca device to use Palm OS v5.x.
How rugged is rugged?
Aceeca currently offers the Meazura RDA, which is a Rugged Digital Assistant that combines the flexibility of the Palm OS with rugged durability.
It costs $399.
"Built to IP67 standards, the Meazura RDA is completely resistant to dust ingress, and is the world's first waterproof (not just resistant) Palm Powered device. The Meazura RDA is the perfect solution for users that need powerful computing performance regardless of their working environment."
