HP's Apotheker Speaks to Bloomberg Businessweek

Thu Mar 10, 2011 - 7:10 PM EST - By Annie Latham

Bloomberg Businessweek's Aaron Ricadela wrote an extensive piece about HP and the areas the new CEO, Leo Apotheker is focusing the company's efforts.

Noted was Apotheker break from his predecessor, Mark Hurd, who emphasized cost-cutting in a bid to improve product quality and spur home-grown technology.

One interesting part was the talk about HP's emphasis on webOS. Apotheker talked about creating "a massive platform" by making better use of the operating system.

Starting next year, every one of the PCs shipped by HP will include the ability to run WebOS in addition to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows, Apotheker said.

The thinking behind this move is that software developers may be interested in creating a wider range of apps that would differentiate HP PCs, printers, tablets and phones from those sold by rivals.

Another notable in the story was Apotheker's nickname: Polar Bear

Apparently, that's what the managers at SAP's French unit called him because he was "solitary, approachable-looking, but deadly if crossed."

Apotheker mentioned that he was managing his temper better.

The article helped set the stage for Monday's HP Summit.
