Treo 90 Review

Mon Jul 1, 2002 - 12:21 AM EDT - By Michael Ducker

SD/MMC

Yes, the stylus and the SD card both fully fit inside the Treo. But does that really make a pretty picture? It isn't hard to notice that the majority of Springboards that users own are memory related modules. Take the Memplug or Kopsis based adapters. Or the Handspring flash module or backup module. The Treo 90 has an SD/MMC slot to act out these functions. Using Palm OS 4.1 and its built in VFS support one can run a multitude of applications that utilize this SD slot. Surprisingly, Handspring chose not to include SDIO support in the original Treo 90 - making this slot memory only. Handspring cited lack of available SDIO devices for not having support, but nonetheless an update to SDIO is possible. FYI: PalmSource's Palm OS 4.1 only includes support for memory cards - Palm Computing wrote custom drivers for its devices.

However! Handspring just released the SDIO upgrade for the Treo 90, giving it full use of its slot. Expect more about this soon from TreoCentral.com. Becuause of this I have changed the final conclusion in the review

The Treo includes many built-in ways to access its SD slot. The Card Info program gives details about the currently inserted card and has the option to format it. Applications can be run off the card, although they are fully copied to memory before they actually run. A new copy option is also in Palm OS 4.1.

If you're just looking for extra memory, the SD slot is it. I found it to be fast, easy to use, and the cards are much cheaper than Springboard flash memory. Due to Palm OS 4.1, there are now hundreds of applications that can utilize the slot.
