FAQ: How do I delete the HotSync user name (without a hard reset) and thereby force a recovery synchronization?

FAQ #86: Troubleshooting. By Capt Dumb Dumb. Status: Public, 18163 views. Flag for Review

1. Start a new Memo.
2. Enter the letter "s".
3. Press Alt key. (On the Treo 600 it is labeled "Alt" and is on the left of the space bar. On Treo 180 / 270 / 300, it is the "..." key shared with "0" (zero) to the right of the space bar.)
4. Choose the bottom-most alternate character, it's the short-cut character. It looks like a written lower case "l", a vertical loop.
5. After this short-cut character appears, follow it with a period "." and the number "5".
6. The moment these three characters, short-cut + period + 5, is entered, it will erase itself and the HotSync user name will be deleted.

After having deleted the HotSync user name, the next Hotsync will be a recover sync that will take much longer and will try to restore as much from the desktop computer's data as possible -- not quite like a "desktop overwrites handheld", this is a more thorough sync. It may help resolve some unusual types of HotSync problems but this method should only be used as a last resort.
