Palm Removes Verizon 700p, 700w|wx ROM Updaters

Sun Aug 12, 2007 - 1:30 PM EDT - By Dieter Bohn

Update: Palm has updated their Official Blog with more information. Specifically, you can submit your email address to be informed when the update is back up. They also provide numbers to call if you're experiencing the error. Finally, they note that the desktop installer for the Sprint 700p ROM Update has been taken down as well - the SD install method is still available, however.

Palm has taken down the latest ROM updates for Verizon Treos - namely the 700p, the 700w, and the 700wx. As previously reported by TreoCentral, the 700p ROM update seemed to cause some network connectivity issues for some users, and this confirms it. Surprisingly, both the PalmOS Treo and the Windows Mobile version both have the same message on their update pages (700p and 700wx):

We have taken down the Verizon Wireless Treo 700p and 700w/wx updaters as a result of increasing customer reports of network connectivity issues following the updates. We are currently investigating the issue and will re-post as soon as they become available.

The reported error displays "Error 3000 - Data network is not available" when attempting to connect to the data network. This error does not affect your device or personal data in any other way. Thank you for your patience.

The connectivity issues have a very long discussion in the TreoCentral forums. "Error 3000" issues have been corroborated in the TreoCentral forums.

The Verizon 700p ROM update came via a strange method - a "soft launch" at Verizon stores and then slightly later a full release on Palm's website. When we know more about the availability of a fix for Verizon users, we'll let you know.

Of course, the 700p ROM has been a very contentious and fraught issue. The Sprint version of the patch was oft-delayed, then posted and subsequently removed (although finally reposted). The patch wasn't forthcoming in the first place until TreoCentral member Bob-C organized a campaign and wrote an open letter to Palm asking for answers for the 700p's many bugs.

Below, a YouTube video detailing the history of the Treo 700 ROM updates:
